Deacon John Ferguson

Deacon Assistant
Deacon John Ferguson was ordained a deacon in the Birmingham, Alabama Diocese on May 7, 1977. His diaconate ministries have been quite because of his employment moves to several different dioceses. He has served as a Deacon in many parishes and in almost all phases of parish ministry. He was chaplain at the Talladega Federal Prison for a short time. His most memorable work was following hurricane Katrina when he organized and ran the work done by Operation Helping Hands in New Orleans. He was instrumental in gutting and cleaning over 2,000 homes with 10,000 volunteers.
He and his wife, Mary, have been married for 51 years. They have 4 children, a daughter and three sons; 8 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife is a native of New Orleans and he grew up in Birmingham. They met at Mardi Gras in 1958 and were married in 1960 while he was still a student at Auburn University. He graduated in Electrical Engineering in 1963. They have lived in the Baton Rouge area for 12 years. We have been assigned to Holy Rosary and St. George parishes during that time
